2. Peer Support Workshops Featuring Sheryl Mead (GTA)—Update

The Krasman Centre, a consumer/survivor and family support centre in York Region, is offering two educational opportunities with this leading peer support advocate.

One is a week-long workshop on Intentional Peer Support to Crisis Intervention.

3. Consumer/Survivor Information Resource Centre of Toronto (New Address)

They are now relocated to the Queen Street site of CAMH (1001 Queen Street West at Ossington Street).  You can find their office in the “mall” in the Paul Christie Centre.  There is no room number but there is a big banner on the main outside wide wall of their office space and a small sign outside the front door.  Community Resources Connections of Toronto (CRCT) always posts their most recent issues.  The November 1st newsletter is available at:

1. LHINs Offer Integration Toolkits and Strategies Materials

A partnership of five LHINs (Central East, Central West, South East, Erie ST. Clair, and Central) and several provincial organizations have released a toolkit for health service provider boards.  These materials provide organization boards with understanding as to how to work together, and suggest to LHIN boards how to create successful voluntary integration initiatives.

3. Evidence-Based Care Requires Consumer-Focused Research

The National Working Group on Evidence-Based Health Care is a collaboration of consumer and patient organizations, health professional associations, researchers, and other stakeholders that seek to empower consumers and advocate for evidence-based health care. They define evidence-based health care as healthcare decision-making and policy which respects the experiential knowledge and expressed needs of consumers along with the judgment of service providers.  This guide available online provides a step-by-step approach by which all aspects of the research process from governance to evaluation can be made more user-friendly.  You can access this resource at:

4. PPAO’s David Simpson Moving On (MH Police Records Check Coalition)

In his own words:

5. BVTA Hosts “Communication With Confidence” Workshop (Brantford)

Brantford Vocational Training Association is a consumer/survivor organization and is offering a full-day workshop facilitated by Spencer Brennan of the Ontario Self-Help Resource Centre on Wednesday, November 5th.  We have attached a flyer and registration form; please note this is free to all consumer/survivors, but that space is limited.

6. Medications, Pregnancy and Lactation (Webinar)

7. “Building Equitable Partnerships Symposium” (Toronto)

This three-day conference takes place from Wednesday, November 5 to Friday November 7th in Toronto.  It features 30 workshop and panel presentations from notables such as Pat Capponi (survivor and anti-poverty advocate), Dr. Kwame McKenzie (ethno-racial mental health), and Dr. Cornelia Wieman (aboriginal health).

1. 25 in 5 Poverty Event

As NewsToGo readers will know, the province has been considering anti-poverty initiatives as a policy priority.  With recent reports that the government may be reconsidering their support due to the deteriorating fiscal situation, this meeting will be of great interest.

On October 27th, the 25 in 5 Network for Poverty Reduction will host a Toronto Network General Assembly to bring together friends and allies as we countdown to the announcement of Ontario’s Poverty Reduction plan in December 2008.

2. Empowerment Council Press Release on Jeffrey James Coroner’s Inquest

3. Voices of Experience Training Program (Hamilton)

Mental Health Rights Coalition is offering a free five-week training program on Wednesdays (beginning November 5, 2008 from 1 – 4 pm) for consumers of addiction and mental health services who want to participate effectively within committees, boards, and organizations.  We have attached the flyer.
